What does this mean for how we deal with technology?

Artificial intelligence meets us every day: in chatbots, voice assistants, or navigation systems. But why do we often treat AI as if it were a person?

What it means to humanize AI

An often overlooked aspect is the choice of voice. Many voice assistants use female voices, a design based on societal stereotypes. This decision unconsciously influences our perception of authority, friendliness, or competence.

More and more often, we see that users talk to AI systems, name them or thank them. This behavior is no coincidence, but based on a psychological principle: the CASA model (Computers Are Social Actors).

It describes that people treat technology as social beings, especially when they show human characteristics such as language, voice, or facial expressions.

Whether Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant: voice-based AI systems appear particularly human through their voices and interactions. Language triggers trust, closeness and even sympathy in us, traits that significantly influence our behavior toward technology.

Examples of effects:

  • Higher acceptance and frequency of use
  • Lower threshold for disclosing personal data
  • Increased willingness to follow recommendations (e.g. when shopping online)

What risks does humanizing AI entail?

As helpful as it is when technology is intuitive to use, humanizing AI also carries risks. Because: the more human a machine seems, the harder it is for us to recognize its artificial nature and to rationally question what it does with our data or how it influences our decisions.

Examples of risks:

  • Impulsive buying behavior triggered by friendly recommendations from voice AI
  • Data disclosure out of a feeling of trust
  • Misguided emotional attachment, e.g. in children or sensitive user groups

Why do people often treat AI systems like real persons?

Because our brain instinctively recognizes social cues: voice, language, or facial expressions make us perceive machines as social beings. The CASA model (Computers Are Social Actors) explains exactly this behavior.

What are the benefits of AI seeming “human”?

A humanized AI lowers entry barriers, creates trust, and can make the interaction more pleasant. This increases acceptance, especially with complex technologies.

What is problematic about humanizing AI?

It can create illusions: anyone who experiences an AI emotionally questions less critically how it works, what data it collects, or what interests stand behind it.

Why are female voices in voice AI an ethical issue?

Because they are often used without reflection and reinforce stereotypical role models: friendly, helpful, subordinate. This influences our subconscious and societal expectations of technology.

What do we call for when dealing with AI?

Education, responsibility, and real empowerment: technology should not deceive or manipulate, but empower people, through good design, ethical awareness, and a clear stance.

“When artificial intelligence appears human, its impact must not be underestimated.”

Ethics and Responsibility in Dealing with AI

We call for a conscious approach to AI.
Particularly sensitive use cases, e.g. in healthcare, education, or in cases of psychological strain, require responsible use.

Humanizing AI is a powerful tool, but also a double-edged sword. For us as a society to benefit from voice AI and digital assistants, education, ethics, and critical awareness are needed.

At aime, we deal with exactly these questions:

  • What does a human digital future look like?
  • What does it mean when technology triggers feelings?
  • How can good design create trust without deceiving?
